The Krewe of Athena made a very colorful splash this past week as we took our 2019 class of debutantes on an East Coast Tour. In fact, it was a lavender and lime splash of color as our twelve debutantes toured New York City and Washington, D. C. “We we’re able to visit so many of the places we studied about,” said one debutante. But the tour wasn’t only fun, games and shopping. It was educational too! They enjoyed discovering our nation’s past, present, and future. Most memorable, would be the emotional tour through the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

While touring New York City, they got a chance to experience why it’s dubbed the “cultural capital of the United States.” President Shonitra Vaughn stated, “It’s important that we expose our debutantes to much as possible. We hope this experience inspires them by what can be accomplished when you follow your dreams.”

Under our OWL Initiative, the Krewe of Athena has presented nearly one hundred debutantes and princesses during our annual tableau, and countless others have benefitted from the mentorship programs we offer.

“We are more than just a Mardi Gras Krewe.”
